I started riding my bike in college as a means of transportation, but I loved passing people (competitive what?) on the trails and racing the bus to Dupont Circle. So that's how this all started. I bought a road bike to do a triathlon with my friends. It was great even though the stupid full-aluminum bicycle hurt my butt. I've since learned a lot about finding the ride saddle. After college, I was a bike messenger for a bit for the love of racing cars. Now, I ride for fun and train and race when I get a chance. I've learned so much abut bikes and riding from working at Capitol Hill Bikes and riding with all the guys at Route 1 Velo. When I'm not at the shop, I'm pursuing my master's in public policy at George Washington University and interning in Congress.

I loved to ride as a kid but lost track of my bike somewhere in that transition between spots and just never got a replacement. I played football and rugby in high school and in college studied martial arts but after that, as I settled into my career, I got kind of restless from inactivity (not to mention fat) so I bought a mountain bike to get some exercise. Enjoyed that for a while until my buddy Clift, who owned a road bike, bragged about how much faster they were than mountain bikes. That sounded like a challenge to me so I agreed to go out riding with him and see how my knobby tired machine compared. Well it didn’t compare very well and the weekend after that ride I bought my first road bike. From there I started touring, doing centuries, and ultimately got into racing. I joined the club in 1994 and raced for a couple of years but had to put that on hold soon after my second child was born. Six kids and 10 years later I’m back for another go at it. I’ve raced with this team since back in the College Park Racing days and it’s great to be associated with them again. This was, and remains an outstanding club. I started road racing a little when I was in high school and did a bit more when I was in college but it was always in the diving off-season which was my main sport (springboard & platform). I moved around a bit and got a job in the DC area in 1999 where I met Rodges Ankrah at the Turkey Day Race. I started doing the roller races and training at the College Park Bike Shop with the club (which was then College Park Racing), made some great friends, drank some beer, and did some very fun racing. I eventually moved back to Atlanta, raced down there, and then my wife and I moved to Heidelberg, Germany where I only did a little road and mountain bike racing but did a lot of amazing riding. We’re back now and I’m excited about this next season and the great group of people that we have together, not just for the riding and competition, but for the camaraderie and the service that we as a group can give back to cycling and to the greater community. I started with a few local crits. Next thing I knew I was dragging my parents all over the east coast from race to race. While in college I started really mountain biking and found a new mutation for my addiction. After college I started working extremely long hours keeping me away from my bike. Went through full withdrawal and as an after-effect gained a massive amount of weight. Thank goodness I fell off the wagon. I dusted off my bike. I quit my line of work. Took a job at a local bike shop. I then rode all the time. I moved to Germany to be close to a great gal. There I lied, cheated, stole (okay mostly borrowed her grandmother's bike) to get a chance to ride on some perfect roads and trails. Asked this girl to marry me and brought her back to Arlington. I met Abby Raymond at a cross race and he brought me out to a Sunday ride and I met and joined some of the greatest addicts in the DC area. I did not get interested in riding as an adult until I was in the Navy’s Nuclear Power School and I needed a way to relieve stress. Over the next six years I rode when I could, but I never was able to train seriously. In 2003 I moved to Capitol Hill and began riding with the Capitol Hill Bikes shop rides. During the spring of 2004 I realized that I was doing well during the club rides without training and decided to see what would happen if I did train. With encouragement from fellow Route 1 Velo riders I began to race during the 2006 race season. I had a successful race season: upgrading categories to Cat 4 and placing 7th in my best race at Tyson’s Corner Crit. I guess that not much has changed since. Being on a bike always makes me feel normal and free. For the longest time I just enjoyed the pleasures of riding with friends and participating in organized rides. However, I decided to try my luck at Greenbelt, in the last race of the 2005 season. I was instantly hooked in the rush that comes with racing. This year has been my first "real" year racing. I just upgraded to a four and have been enjoying the suffering with the great Cat 4 R1V squad. I just hope to improve in the near future to be of some more help to the team. Eric Griffin Born: 1974 Hometown: Washington DC Occupation: middle management bureaucrat Years Riding:6 Avg. Miles/Year: 2500 Racing Category: 4 I ran track and cross-country in high school and college, and only occasionally rode a bike for "cross-training." After a few years of post-college running, I grew frustrated with my diminishing running performance and lack of time to train like I did back in "the day." I decided to give cycling a shot since it was a clean slate with no performance benchmark for me to measure myself against. I started mostly from the fitness perspective, getting good aerobic workouts while saving my knees. My competitiveness took over, and I decided to give racing a try. It was a but demoralizing to go from having success in running races to being utterly destroyed in cycling races, but it didn't dampen the fun! I race when I can, and enjoy the team camaraderie and friendships that being a part of R1V has produced. Marine Band, which has several active cyclists and is just around the corner from Capitol Hill Bikes. In March of 2007, I competed in my first race, a 26 mile road race at Camp Pendleton, CA, and was hooked. After having done some Sunday morning shop rides, and having ridden at Hains Point with some R1V riders, it was clear joining the team was the thing to do. I can't imagine having a nicer, more supportive group of people to ride with and teach me what this racing stuff is all about. Someday I hope to be able to keep up with them.

By the next year, I had a new triathlon bike and was trying to figure out how to train better and smarter. Learned early on that training in a group was more motivating and a much better way to learn from other people. From then on I found friends to ride with where ever I lived; Michigan, Georgia, Utah, Oregon and finally Washington D.C. This is my first year competing in bike races and triathlons. I hope to transition into only bike racing next season. Riding with R1V has been a great way to improve riding strength and skills and I've met some great people along the way. So I figured out a way to ride my old mountain bike to my job near BWI 2 or 3 times a week (not all the way-- I used the B-30 bus). Then I got a great job in DC with the Ped-Bike Program at DDOT, sold the second car, and began riding to the metro every day and then all the way to work a couple days a week. In short, I got hooked on riding. Then fellow Greenbelt dad and R1V teammate Raymond Peterson and I convinced our wives that we needed road bikes and there was no looking back. I started racing last summer in 3 Greenbelt races and actually held on to finish the last one with the pack. That got me hooked on racing. (BTW, I now weigh 153 lbs.) Having a friendly group of riders/racers to learn from makes R1V an excellent club. Also, several R1V folks live near me so it's easy to ride with teammates. Racing in college put me in an aggressive mindset in terms of road riding, as well as many years beforehand with mountain bike riding and racing, so R1V was a natural extension for me. My favorite race so far in the area has been the RFK crit, but the Coppi road race sounds like a blast as well. R1V is a great group of people that I enjoy riding and racing with very much. After college, I moved to California, for graduate school where I rode the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains almost daily. After three years in California, I moved back to D.C., where, sadly, I did not spend much time on the bike. Late in 2005, after switching jobs, I again found time to devote to cycling. For the better part of the last year, I have been trying to regain form (which I have learned is much harder to do at 36) and racing skills. I'm not very good at cornering, descending, sprinting, or achieving a position even remotely aerodynamic on the bike, but otherwise I'm not too bad. Favorite Quote: Randy Quaid: Mmm! Mmm! Mike Esmonde Born: 4-2-79 Hometown: Philly/Orlando!! Started Riding/Racing: 1999 Avg. Miles/Year: 12,000+ Racing Category: 2 Favorite quote:"winning is only 1 part of racing" About: Growing up in Philly I remember my Dad and uncles allways going to the coors classic and getting me a cap each year. Guess my dads love of cycling rubbed off on me. Started Mtb riding in high school for fun but never raced or heard of any races. I started working in bike shops in 1998 and mainly did mtb but a little road on the mtb with slicks. Started doing MS150's with my dad for fun, that opened my eyes to road biking and how much faster those guys went. In 2001 I broke my hand on the mtb and had to ride a T.T. rig to get exercise, it was the only thing I could hold on to and shift. Parents bought me a road bike to get away from mtb and thats all she wrote. The first race I went to was the 2001 Florida crit champs and I still had a splint on the hand. Someone told me when I hear the bell be the first across the line. Easy enough I said and won my frist race. 2002 I won the Florida Cat 3 bar and ranked #1 in the USA in crits. I moved to D.C. in 2005 and raced for R1V(cause travis said I had to) and did ok the first 2 years here. I won the 2007 Cat 3 bar and took another #1 crit ranking in the USA!! 2008 was a tough season and I finished 30th in the USA for crit rankings. My sister is still the best rider in the family riding fro pro teams over the past 4 years. She also won the Espior National Crit championship a few years back. She is currently more of a runner and plans to do Duathlon Nationals soon and mabey quailify for worlds. I love coaching my team and I get really excited when it pays off in the races. Nothing like showing up to a race and having everybody around you scared that your entire squad of guys can roll and throw it down. Rolling it in the 1,2's this year with Jay, shane, John W,Rob, plus the 3's that do our races should be fun. Looking for a great season and will try my hand at 30+ races this year!! Looking to get some more bar champs in the ranks for 2009!!!

Pete Van Riper Age: 41 Hometown: Chicago, Il Occupation: Instructor of Fine Arts Years Riding: 3.9 Avg. Miles/Year: 3000 Racing Category: 4 I have always had the mindset of a solo long distance rider, almost all of my riding is to keep myself fit enough to take on the super long range suffer fests deep into the big mountains. A very good day is 100+ on Skyline, or the back roads all around, up and over Sugarloaf Mountain. The idea that cycling is a team sport came as a result of a trip to the Alps. I became enamored with the classic climbs of the Tour, and in 2005, rode all up and over the huge cols. The best part of the trip was running into two lads from South Yorkshire, not only did they actually follow up with the-Hey, give me your email…we’ll stay in touch-line at the end of the trip, but we have gone back this past three years, and are in the process of planning for 2009. On the first trip, I was all awe, and no strength. If it weren’t so cool to be riding in the Alps, I would have been absolutely mortified by how hard it is. Lee and Wayne’s advice was to go out and ride with a steady group, join a club, riding with a group will make you a much better rider they said, so after a chance meeting up with the remnants of a Sunday Capitol Hill Bikes shop ride, I joined in and have been riding with Route 1 Velo ever since, making the transition from plucky solo rider to a pretty descent club rider, and to what I hope is a full season of racing in 2008. Peter Kreishman Age: 30 Hometown: Cincinnati, OH Occupation: Army Physician Years Riding: 20.1 Avg. Miles/Year: 4,000 - 5,000 Racing Category: 4 I had a bike as a kid but never really rode too regularly. During high school I rode my mountain bike and raced with a NORBA license in the Sport class for a couple years. Then college hit, and I bought my first road bike. Both mountain and road riding were great ways to keep me sane during med school and residency. Then this past year I decided to get more serious and got into racing, getting my start at Route 1 Velo's own Greenbelt series. I enjoyed it so much that I kept coming back for more and looking for more races. My work keeps me pretty busy, but I try my best to get out and train at every opportunity. I’m currently in my 4th year of residency in General Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and just got married on October 7th, 2006!
Raymond Peterson Age: 44 Hometown: Stratford, CT Occupation: Biotechnology Executive Years Riding: 39.5 Avg. Miles/Year: 3,000-5,000 Racing Category: 4 I started riding when I was in kindergarten. After college in 1986 I started on my old ten-speed and quickly switched to a Miyata. By 1988 I was on a Gios Torino and logging 5,000 miles per year. In 1991 I raced category 4 in New Mexico, logging over 9,000 miles. I won a training time trial and criterium and I placed highly in a number of official criteriums and road races. I participated in the 3-day Tour of the Gila. My personal records were a 58:30 40K, a 4:10:00 century and 1:35:00 half-century. I continued to ride for the next 15 years but I paid more attention to finishing my Ph.D., getting married, having kids and starting a business. At the start of 2006 I bought training books and a road bike and raced category 5. I placed 2nd at Murad Road Race, 3rd at Turkey Day Criterium, and 4th in the 4/5 35+ category at the Back To School Criterium. Chris Militello of Capitol Hill Bikes always treated me incredibly well when I would visit DC while living in Toronto. We had mutual race friends from the past. He talked about me joining R1V when I returned to the states. I did join and I’ve met some really good people through R1V. It’s a good fit for me given my ever-expanding family and lack of time to be focused solely on racing and training. And, I can see it would be even a better fit if I ever choose to refocus on racing again. Favorite Quote: A man cannot stand on your back unless it is bent.

Miles/Year: 4,000 combined Racing Category: Road-4; Cross-4; MTB-2 Race Bikes: Cannondale CAAD 9 (road); Soma DoubleCross (Cyclocross); Gary Fisher Paragon 29er (Mt. Bike) I did my first official NORBA race in 2001, the Sea Otter Classic. I moved to Colorado for graduate school and started a mountain bike team at the University of Denver, which has grown into 60+ strong riders, though primarily roadies. After graduate school I moved to the New England (Vermont) and discovered that it is much more pleasurable to ride a single-speed mountain bike when you are not above 8,000 feet and the sport of cyclocross. I do not do much road racing anymore, just focusing on cyclocross and my renewed love for racing mountain bikes. Some day I would like to race the Shenandoah 100 and the Everest Base Camp - Kathmandu MTB Race.

Miles/Year: I don’t really keep track of mileage, but estimating by the number of hours I typically ride, I’d guess I log between 6,500 and 7,500 miles each year Race Category: 4…for life, I’m afraid Race Bike: Klein Quantum Pro I used to run 10K’s for fun, but my knee couldn’t take it anymore, so I started riding...and riding...and riding…. It’s incredibly fun to go fast, and even more fun to go faster than someone else. Cycling to me is like a combination of running, motorcycling, and weight lifting. Scott Cernich Age: 33 Hometown: New Orleans, LA Occupation: Attorney Years Riding: 4.3 Avg. Miles/Year: 5000 Racing Category: 3 I was born and raised in New Orleans. I came to DC in 2001 after stops in Boston (law school) and New Jersey (wife’s graduate school). I was a football player in high school weighing in a 225 lbs.—wasn’t much for endurance sports. I ballooned to 250+ pounds in college, started running my senior year, dropped some weight, ran some more, trained for and ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 1998, got down to 185. After a string of overuse injuries from running, I bought my first road bike (Specialized) at Capitol Hill Bikes in March 2003. I was looking for a different way to stay in shape. I started doing the shop ride and some of the Route 1 Velo folks talked me into coming out to race Greenbelt. Got hooked on riding and racing.
Servio Medina Age: 40 Hometown: Where the bike comes to a stop. Occupation: IT Consultant Years Riding: 7 Avg. Miles/Year: 10,000+ Racing Category: 3 Race Bike: 2006 Specialized Tarmac E5 A second knee surgery in 1999 got me thinking about cause and affect. After 10 years of competitive Ultimate Frisbee (and many other injuries), I turned in one set of cleats for another. Rode *all* the time, seeking out every group ride that De Land, FL had to offer...which in 1999 meant 2-5 riders (Scott F. can attest). When the group rides numbered 5, we took turns "chasing the rabbit": one took off time-trialing; minutes later the "pack" (if that's what you could call it) chased. We saw about 1-2 cars the entire time. The roads were fuh-lat. Rotations and sprints were the thing. Never had so much fun in a rotation. Example: 25 miles from home, one rider says she needs to be home in about an hour. The five of us pace-lined her home in time...we went for beers. Since moving to DC in 2002, I have been actively involved in racing and promoting cycling - first with NCVC and now Route 1 Velo. After "racing in the pack" a lot, I found my racing edge in 2003 as a CAT4, winning three races, including the Virginia State Criterium Championship, and placing top ten in a handful of others. My last race as a CAT4 that year resulted in a mandatory upgrade. That was a good year. Early in 2004, I was hospitalized with a virus that kept me off the bike for the first part of season. After a stellar comeback that included successful team tactics and victories (helped lead out a sprinter for the CAT3 win at CSC), I succumbed to a relapse that cost the remainder of the season. I decided to lay low and focus on supporting the club, bide my time, and live to race another season. Things turned around in 2005. From Festival of Speed in Orlando, FL early in the year (6th), to the winning move (from the gun) in Silver Spring that I helped initiate (4th), to a TTT (1st), it felt good to be doing something right on the bike - based in large part on teamwork (my own and others' teams). Then in 2006, I hung the bike up (again). Needed a mental and physical break. I joined Route 1 Velo to help foster cycling and a team that races together well. I have seen the club grow from a handful of racers that showed up at races, to a fun, well-respected, talented group of men and women that show up to race...well. Now, in the middle of 2007, the bug is back. I am riding a lot again, and wanting more. Stay tuned. Favorite Quote: It's not about how fast you ride; it's about how you ride fast. - S. Medina
Steve Poole Age: 50 Hometown: Lisbon, MD Occupation: Technician Years Riding: 34.5 Avg. Miles/Year: 5,000 Racing Category: 4 I have always been interested in bike riding. However, my first ten years after College were jobs requiring extensive travel. I started riding again in 1989 with an old Peugeot. It didn’t take long to get hooked, but it took a year or so to be introduced to racing. I have never placed above 20th, but did enjoy a team time trial in 1997 with the College Park team. Doug O’Donnell, Dave Campbell, Kemal Tuncer and I did the 25 mile Church Creek course in 59:52. We earned the team’s only bar points that year. I joined the College Park Bicycles team in 1995 after one season with the Kodak team (Victory Velosport).

Everytime I went into the shop with needs for a 10 year old MTB the shop was super friendly, and sold me only what I needed, which was often nothing. Then I attended my first Skills and Drills Ride in Jan 07 on my new Schwinn Fastback, lost my IHOP breakfast, and was hooked. The workout was suited for all levels of fitness and skill, and the riders on the team were awesome to be around. Favorite Quote: If you're on the front, put it in the gutter. - Mike E.
